FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

126TH COMMENCEMENT AT MORGAN STATE IS ANOTHER FIRST

- Stacy Davis, Fannie Mae Foundation Chief, To Deliver Keynote -

Morgan State University celebrates its 126th Commencement on Sunday, May 19, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. for degree recipients in the undergraduate, master's and doctoral level programs. Commencement 2002 is history-making for the University because it has never before awarded degrees in its public health program and, in addition, Morgan will award its first doctorate degrees in engineering this year.

One of the features of Commencement 2002 is the keynote speaker, Stacy H. Davis, president and CEO of one of the largest foundations in the country, The Fannie Mae Foundation. With a primary mission that is critical to millions of low and middle income Americans by helping to make homeownership a reality, the Fannie Mae Foundation is the nation's largest foundation devoted to affordable housing and community development. Under Davis' leadership, Fannie Mae has become more efficient and more effective through the increased use of technology. To date, more than 12 million people have been helped to achieve their dream of homeownership.

"Given Ms. Davis' motivational style and inspirational leadership during her remarkable career, it is an entirely appropriate way to cap off our students' educational experience here at Morgan," said President Earl S. Richardson.

Davis was an investment banker prior to joining Fannie Mae, with positions at Merrill Lynch and Pryor McClendon Counts in Atlanta. She currently serves on numerous boards, including Georgetown University's Board of Regents; the Board of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund; the Washington Ballet and the Policy Advisory Board of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. Davis has an AB in economics from Georgetown University and an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Business Administration.

The main Commencement ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. in the W. A. C. Hughes Memorial Stadium, followed immediately by the distribution of diplomas and departmental awards during school ceremonies at various locations on the campus.

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a coeducational institution offering more than 60 academic programs leading to bachelor's degrees as well as programs at the master's and doctoral levels. As Maryland's public urban university, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
