Morgan State Estuarine Research Center Hosts Senator Ben Cardin
Today, U. S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), will visit the Morgan State Estuarine Research Center (ERC) to announce new federal funding for a pilot program to help restore Maryland’s oyster production and seafood industry.
Oysters play a key role in restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay by filtering algae and improving water quality for all organisms. Due to over harvesting, environmental damage, and disease caused by the MSX and Dermo parasite, the Bay’s oyster population has declined to record lows. Such declines have had a severe impact on Maryland’s seafood industry and as well as the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
