Morgan State University to Host Barrington Irving During Engineer's Week
- First Person of African Descent to Attempt Solo Flight around the World -

The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University hosted a presentation by Barrington Irving, the first person of African descent, and the youngest person to attempt a solo flight around the world on Friday, February 16. His visit to Morgan coincided with National Engineer’s Week and the 21st Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference, held February 15th to the 17th at the Baltimore Convention Center.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for students from around the area to see the impact their learning experiences can have on the field of engineering and history itself,” said Dr. Eugene M. DeLoatch, Dean of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University.

Irving, a 23 year old senior majoring in aerospace at Florida Memorial University, will embark on a 5-week flight aboard a single-engine plane he calls "Inspiration." He addressed students, faculty and the staff of Morgan State University on the details of his historic venture, and shared some of his personal experiences. Irving’s press conference was held at 10 a.m. in the library of the Schaefer engineering building at 5200 Perring Parkway.

The 21st Annual National Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference serves as a networking and training opportunity for minority engineering professionals and students. Workshops and seminars take place during the 3-day conference.
