MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

-Leading National Producer of African-American Participants in International Scholarship Program-

Two recent graduates and a current doctoral student at Morgan State University have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships for the upcoming 2008-2009 academic year by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The University’s total Fulbright award count now stands at 120 students, more than any other historically black college or university.

JoAnna M. Ford, a 2008 B.A. graduate in Music, has received a grant to study in Germany.  Jahmila T. Vincent, a 2008 B.A. graduate in Political Science, will serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Vietnam, and Lynn M. Washington, a Ph.D. candidate in English, has been awarded a scholarship for study in Jamaica.

“We are all very proud of our past and current Fulbrighters,” says Dr. Carleen S. Leggett, director of the Morgan Fulbright Program. We are also proud of the fact that Morgan is a stand-out performer in the production of Fulbright scholars.”

The Morgan State University Fulbright Program was founded in 1951 by Dr. Sandye Jean McIntyre, a distinguished professor of Foreign Languages. The Fulbright Program, founded in 1946 under the late Senator J. William Fulbright, was established to increase mutual understanding between Americans and the global community.  Dr. McIntyre received his first Fulbright Scholarship to France in 1951, making him the first African-American to receive a Fulbright for study in the country. Soon after, Dr. McIntyre was appointed director of Morgan’s Fulbright Program, and served in this position until his death in 2006.

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a Carnegie classified Doctoral Research Institution offering more than 70 academic programs leading to bachelors degrees as well as programs at the masters and doctoral levels. As Maryland’s Public Urban University, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
