Morgan State University Awarded Research Grant from IBM

Among the First to Use New Technology for Instruction and Research

Morgan State University and IBM will announce a new alliance to promote research and innovation on IBM Power Architecture technology at a presentation on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. in the William Donald Schaefer building on the campus of Morgan State University.

Power Architecture is the industry's leading technology for the rapidly growing consumer electronics, gaming, and digital device marketplace. Power-based microprocessors are embedded inside digital devices large and small, from game consoles and sophisticated automotive powertrains, to wireless routers and the world's fastest supercomputers.

The presentation is a joint effort between the Executive Leadership Council’s Technology Transfer Project and IBM’s Academic Initiative, both established to provide historically black colleges and universities with software, hardware, and materials to cultivate expertise in the field of information technology.

Morgan is one of the first schools in the nation to allow its students to test the Power technology in a hands-on environment, giving students an opportunity to develop key skills using the advanced technology in classes such as Computer Architecture and Advanced Digital Design.

“The partnership between Morgan and IBM is one the university takes great pride in,” says Dr. Earl S. Richardson, President of Morgan State University. “This initiative continues our efforts to be at the forefront of an ever-evolving technological society.”

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a doctoral research professional institution offering more than 60 academic programs leading to bachelor’s degrees as well as programs at the master’s and doctoral levels. As Maryland’s public urban university, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
