-Series Focuses on Tuskegee Syphilis Study-

Morgan State University, in conjunction with the Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins University will sponsor Beyond Legacy, a series of programs and events examining the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The series begins October 7, 2005 with an opening night reception for “The Greater Good,” an exhibit by artist Tony Hooker, in the Murphy Fine Arts Center’s James E. Lewis Museum at 6:00 p.m. The reception is followed by Theatre Morgan’s presentation of the play “Miss Evers’ Boys,” the story of the “Tuskegee Experiment” at 7:30 p.m. in the Turpin-Lamb Theatre.

On Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 9:00 a.m., the Morgan State University School of Public Health and WEAA, in association with the Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Center at Johns Hopkins University, will host a symposium about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The keynote speaker for the symposium will be Dr. Vanessa Northington Gamble, Director of the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care.

“Morgan and Johns Hopkins are pleased to be able to collaborate on this series,” says Gabriel Tenabe, curator of the James E. Lewis Museum of Art.

“The exhibit will hopefully educate people while the symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss the historical, legal and ethical perspectives of the syphilis study.”

The exhibit will remain on display in the James E. Lewis Museum of Art until Oct. 30, and the play will run until Oct. 9. All events will be held in the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center on the campus of Morgan State University. For ticket information, please call 443.885.4440.
