Morgan President Receives Red Cross AwardMorgan State University President Earl S. Richardson was honored today with the prestigious Chairman’s Award given each year by the American Red Cross. The award was presented at the Sixth Annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast at the Baltimore Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Chairman’s Award is presented annually by the American Red Cross to recognize one individual in Central Maryland who exemplifies the spirit of humanitarianism through their outstanding service to the community. According to the organization, Dr. Richardson was selected for the honor this year because of his contributions to higher education in the region in directing a renaissance at Morgan State University. Dr. Richardson, who is in his 20 th year as president of Morgan, has been responsible for substantial improvements in the school’s physical and program development. There have been major renovations to the university’s historic buildings while at the same time adding new buildings on the campus and expanding the number of programs being offered to students. The school is now considered to be one of the area’s major research institutions as well as one of the nation’s leading doctoral universities for African Americans. “I appreciate this recognition from the American Red Cross,” said Dr. Richardson. “My work at Morgan has been a labor of love, but I have had a great deal of help. It has taken a supportive governor, legislature, Board of Regents and our alumni to bring about Morgan’s resurgence as a leading institution of higher education. This award is really a testament to their diligence and hard work.” In addition to the Chairman’s Award to Dr. Richardson, the Red Cross also recognized heroes in 15 categories at the breakfast, including Fire Fighter, Law Enforcement, Health and Safety, Education and Community Outreach awards.Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a coeducational institution offering more than 60 academic programs leading to bachelor’s degrees as well as programs at the master’s and doctoral levels. As Maryland’s public urban university, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
