Morgan State University Tech Transfer Specialist Receives National Award

Her Efforts with University Tech Transfer Recognized with Howard Bremer Award

Alethea Pounds, technology transfer specialist at Morgan State University, has been selected as a recipient of the 2004 Howard Bremer Award from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). As the award winner, Pounds is given travel and registration expenses to the AUTM's Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas on March 4-6. Pounds, a graduate of Morgan State University School of Engineering and Syracuse University College of Law, is only one of four recipients for this year's award. She will receive formal recognition, an honorarium and the opportunity to enhance her professional development by taking advantage of the education and networking opportunities offered at the meeting.

"Alethea has been energetic in her role to advance the technology development within the University," said Earl S. Richardson, president of Morgan State University. "We congratulate her on her efforts and know that she will bring back even more knowledge to expand on Morgan's tech transfer initiatives."

The scholarship program, named in honor of longtime AUTM founder, leader and technology transfer pioneer Howard Bremer, is established to support students and newcomers to the field. Its objective is to promote educational opportunities for individuals committed to the vision of academic technology transfer. The Scholarship is awarded to those who dream of becoming revolutionaries in the academic technology transfer field.

"My focus was bringing technology transfer to a Historically Black College and University (HBCU)," said Pounds. "I have designed tech transfer programs that assist Morgan State in its commitment to increasing the number of African-Americans and Hispanics represented in science and engineering fields and business ownership. Working with the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), we've promoted the research taking place in our labs and further developed technologies for commercial applications."

"Alethea deserves this high recognition amongst her peers on a national level," said Phillip Singerman, executive director at TEDCO. "Her energy and enthusiasm for promoting Morgan State's technological inventions is unfaltering. We hope to assist her with more tech transfer collaborations from the University."

The AUTM Annual Meeting will feature technology transfer pioneers who played crucial roles in the formation of AUTM and the evolution of academic technology transfer. The meeting includes more than 50 educational workshops, numerous networking opportunities and a 30 th anniversary celebration.
