MORGAN STATE TO HOST WORKSHOP AND FORUM ON REPARATIONS

Panelists Will Examine Historical Link Between Slavery and Race Relations

Morgan State University's Institute for Urban Research will be hosting a workshop and forum to discuss "reparations," a term used to describe whether African Americans should be compensated for the devastating effects of slavery in America.

According to Raymond A. Winbush, PhD, director of the Institute for Urban Research, "Many people are embracing the idea because of the negative effects slavery continues to have on the emotional, economical and political positioning of Blacks in America." Dr. Winbush is the author and editor of Should America Pay? Slavery and the Raging Debate on Reparations. Contributors to the book include: Molefi Kete Asante, John Conyers, Jr., Christopher Hitchens, Haki R. Madubuti, John McWhorter, Deadria C. Farmer-Paellmann and Shelby Steele. Several of the book's contributors may be participating as panelists. Dr. Winbush is also the author of The Warrior Method: A Parents' Guide to Rearing Healthy Black Boys.

The events will be held on Thursday, February 27, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Carl Murphy Fine Arts Center, 1901 Argonne Drive, on Morgan's south campus. The free workshop and forum is co-sponsored by Morgan's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Maurice St. Pierre, PhD, serves as chairman of the department.

Note: A book signing for Should America Pay? Slavery and the Raging Debate on Reparations will immediately follow the workshop and forum. Copies will be available for purchase.
