Morgan State Student Honored by National Transportation Center (NTC) and U. S. Department of Transportation as Student of the Year

The National Transportation Center of Morgan State University and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) are proud to announce that Hellon Ogallo was selected as a recipient of the 12th Annual University Transportation Centers (UTC) Student of the Year Award. This distinction, sponsored by DOT, recognizes Mr. Ogallo's accomplishments in the transportation field.

Research and Special Programs Administrator Ellen G. Engleman announced the awards honoring 32 outstanding students from participating UTCs for their achievements and promise for future contributions to the transportation industry. Students were selected by their schools based on accomplishments in such areas as technical merit and research, academic performance, professionalism and leadership.

"These students are extraordinary, and they are the future of transportation technology," said Administrator Engleman. "We are very proud that our program has fostered and encouraged them to make such excellent contributions, and we hope they will pursue transportation careers."

Ogallo is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Engineering program and is working as a transportation engineer with Century Engineering Inc. in Towson, Maryland. He has assisted with research conducted by Transportation Professor Anthony Saka, and he has co-authored two papers with Civil Engineering Professors Indranil Goswami and Manoj Jha, all whom have worked on research for the National Transportation Center.

The Research and Special Programs Administration administers the UTC program with funding from the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration.

All of the UTCs conduct programs of research, education, and technology transfer activities. The UTC program has produced more than 1,200 research reports, and involved more than 3,500 university students and faculty in the study of transportation.

The NTC undertakes activities to optimize and improve transportation systems management and development. The mission of the center is to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many disciplines comprising transportation through the mechanisms of education; research and technology transfer at the university level. NTC, part of the DOT University Transportation Centers Program, was established by Congress under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), and reauthorized in 1998 by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21).
