MORGAN DEAN TAKES HELM OF WORLD'S PREMIER ENGINEERING EDUCATION SOCIETY

- Eugene M. DeLoatch's Presidency of ASEE Is Milestone for Organization -

Morgan State University's Eugene M. DeLoatch, dean of the university's School of Engineering, has assumed the leadership role of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). When Dean DeLoatch was sworn in as president of ASEE during its annual meeting in Montreal, Canada, on June 19, 2002, he became the first African American to hold that position in the organization's 109-year history.

"I am pleased and honored to have been elected by the members of ASEE to lead the organization at this critical juncture in our nation's history," said Dr. DeLoatch. "It is especially gratifying to know that my colleagues in academe and industry believe with me that, collectively, we can assemble the resources and create the climate that leads to the development of a world-class engineering and engineering technology workforce that is increasingly inclusive, reflective and representative of all of our nation's citizenry."

DeLoatch earned Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering from Tougaloo College and Lafayette College, respectively, and holds both a masters in electrical engineering and a doctorate in bioengineering from the Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY. He has been dean and professor of electrical engineering of Morgan State University's School of Engineering since its founding in 1984.

Dr. DeLoatch has served the ASEE in a number of capacities prior to his elevation to the society's top position, including vice president for public affairs, chairman of the organization's Projects Board and a member of the group's Public Policy Committee.

The American Society for Engineering Education, the world's premier engineering education society, is a non-profit association of more than 12,000 individual, institutional, corporate and international members. Included among its membership are engineering faculty and staff, U. S. colleges of engineering and engineering technology, corporations and other organizations dedicated to promoting excellence in engineering and engineering technology education. Founded in 1893, ASEE plays a key role in developing and promoting policies that will enable engineering education and its allied branches of science and technology to meet new challenges of global competition, changing demographics and critical technical workforce needs.

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a coeducational institution offering more than 60 academic programs leading to bachelor's degrees as well as programs at the master's and doctoral levels. As Maryland's public urban university, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
