MORGAN DEAN HONORED WITH EDUCATIONAL AWARD

- Boy Scouts' Program Recognizes Her Work To Uplift Young Lives -

Morgan State University is proud to announce that Dr. Patricia L. Welch, dean of the university's School of Education and Urban Studies will be honored Thursday, June 13 with the 2002 Educational Award from the Boy Scouts of America's Learning For Life Program. Dr. Welch will receive the award at the 2002 Education Awards Breakfast, June 13, 2002 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Baltimore.

"I am especially pleased to receive this honor because it recognizes achievements in an area to which I have devoted much of my life's work, educating young people," said Dr. Welch, who also serves as Chair of the Baltimore school system's New Board of School of Commissioners.

The Educational Award honors those individuals who have gone above the call of duty, having done what is described as a stellar job in the support of public education. Learning For Life is the character education program operated by the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

According to officials with the Learning For Life program, this is the first year that the award has been given to an educator. The award, in the past, always went to members of the business community. In addition to Dr. Welch, Bill Struever, president and CEO of Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Inc., is also being honored.

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a coeducational institution offering more than 60 academic programs leading to bachelor's degrees as well as programs at the master's and doctoral levels. As Maryland's public urban university, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
