Morgan State National Transportation Center To Host Urban Transportation Summit

Establishing a dialogue about issues related to regional transportation, employment and economic development is the goal of a summit hosted by The National Transportation Center (NTC) of Morgan State University. The Urban Transportation Summit and Career Fair is being held Monday, October 29, 2001, from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM in the Schaefer Engineering Building. It is the first-ever summit and career fair hosted by the NTC of Morgan.

The discussion will focus on the role of transportation in economic development and access to jobs, assessing regional workforce development, specifically, how to attract minorities and women to transportation careers, and providing career opportunities through a career fair for those seeking employment in the transportation industry. The Summit will also feature two panel discussions along with guest speakers, including Maryland U. S. Senator Paul Sarbanes, Representatives Ben Cardin and Elijah Cummings, who will deliver the luncheon keynote address. Transportation industry professionals from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Delaware are expected to attend as well as civic and community groups along with faculty and students who have an interest in transportation issues.

Other events planned for the October 29th transportation summit include a career fair in the Schaefer Engineering Building from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM and a luncheon in the McKeldin Center. Shuttle transportation for the summit is being provided on the campus of Morgan State University by the Maryland Transit Administration. For registration information, contact the NTC at 443.885.3666. For exhibitor information, contact Terry Thornton at 410.243.1399.

The NTC undertakes activities to optimize and improve transportation systems management and development. The mission of the center is to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many disciplines comprising transportation through the mechanisms of education; research and technology transfer at the university level. NTC, part of the USDOT University Transportation Centers Program, was established by Congress under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), and reauthorized in 1998 by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21).
